Greetings Stranger

Here is a list of the current AUI projects:

Dialogue Management
Mentor

Mentor embodies a client-server system and protocol, a multi-modal state-based DM that supports suitable pedagogies to help the students to learn, a VHML [23] [26] compliant Knowledge Base that holds the domain knowledge, and a multi- and hyper-media Client interface (). Each user connects to the central server through the network via a Mentor client. The Mentor server - a Java based mini operating system in its own right - is about 70,000 lines of code in 170 classes in 50 packages.

Rexpression
Generator for Dialogue Management System
This research is concerned with text-based Computer-Human dialogues (CHD). Spelling errors and wrong word choices are forgivable in a human-to-human dialogue. However, these errors are significant in the natural language processing which relies on correct syntax and grammar. This research aims to develop techniques for errors anticipation, synonyms expansion and English to SMS text translation. Hence, by understanding and addressing these problems in CHD, better pattern matching scripts can be written to significantly reduce the disruptions of the dialogue flow and improve the general usability of Dialogue Managers. The outcome is an application that applies these techniques with its performance evaluated. Swee Huat Tan

Outcomes Focused Education

The goal of the "Mentor and Outcomes Focused Education" project is to determine if the Mentor software agent system can be successfully applied to Curtin University's Outcomes Focused Education (OFE) environment. This will involve a system refinement and a longitudinal case study to evaluate expected outcomes and benefits.

Embodied Conversational Agents
Personality The research will design, implement and evaluate an adaptive personality model for an Embodied Conversational Agent. This research will be done in a number of stages:
  1. Investigate previous research and theories of personality models, and their specification.
  2. Select an existing or design a new specification for an adaptive personality model.
  3. Convert the specification into a suitable computer model.
  4. Implement the model on an MPEG-4 facial animation system.
  5. Evaluate the model in terms of user identification of the modeled personality and the effectiveness of the human computer interaction.
  6. Disseminate research findings.

Smilie-mail: An Avatar-based Asynchronous Communication Application The research was carried out in the areas of Facial animation, MPEG-4 Standard and VHML. The research resulted in the design, development and evaluation of an easy to use online system that was used in the communication of messages that were perceived by the users as affective and engaging. Companions for the Elderly
Pandora The typical companion of many old people is the TV. It is their source of information and entertainment. It is very familiar to old people and most have mastered its complexities. It is not new, it is not threatening. It is ideal to house a Companion - an intelligent companion that has a face and can converse with the user. C-Chat: A video chat system for the elderly This project aims to design a video chat component for the Pandora framework. The component is based on the principles of adaptive user interfaces and is meant for use by elderly people. The focus of this research is to investigate the usefulness of video chat applications for the elderly and their caretakers. Parija Mehta

Enabling Technology
Expand

Expandy allows full control of the Gnome window manager environment through a single button interface. This gives people with physical disabilities access to a computing environment by emulating keyboard and mouse events using an actuator and on-screen feedback.

While commercial solutions exist, the costs involved can be high. The expand system aims to be free, or at least inexpensive. This applies to all aspects of the system including hardware, software, and support.
